Onyemaechi: Who knows tomorrow?

April, 2023

At Discovery Museum, Art Tech District, 7 Hombori Street, Wuse 2, Abuja—Nigeria

A collection of digital paintings titled Onyeameachi: No one Knows Tomorrow (2023), which takes its title from the name of my father, brings together both new pieces and reprising ones from ongoing series. This body of work embraces the various emotions connected to being a Nigerian, the pleasures and optimism we cling to in our various settings, as well as the simple but priceless moments that arise as we navigate difficulties and struggles. Some of the works were inspired by actual events, while others came about as a result of musings on life's many possibilities. Highlighting the beauty of the moment while experiencing the anticipation or expectations that come with life's unexpected turns is the primary goal. Every pattern and splash of color is a representation of the aspirations for a better existence. While some images are straightforward representations of these feelings, others have deeper meanings. Fundamentally, this body of work encourages the viewer to consider their own life journey and to reflect on how, even though we may carve our own paths through our goals and efforts, some experiences and turn of events are merely the product of a power greater than our own.

About the Artist

Chidinma Yemisi Mordi has always had a love for art. From scribbling on the walls of her home as a little girl to using colour pencils to draw disney princesses in elementary school, this however never stopped her from studying architecture and earning a master's degree in the field. Over the years she has worked to produce remarkable artworks that many people can relate to having developed in both disciplines. She paints in a variety of styles, including traditional, digital, and mixed-media works, all of which are influenced by the rich Nigerian culture she has grown to love. She finds inspiration in seemingly ordinary daily activities like taking a road trip through communities and socializing with Nigerians at traditional weddings, mechanic shops, and markets. She believes that she can play her part in the preservation of her culture through art. Chidinma's style is distinctive in that it depicts particular Nigerian realities carrying colourful essence, line art, afrofuturism, and African pattern design.
